What is ALS?

ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressively neurodegenerative disease that has deleterious effects on the motor neurons of the patient's upper body. Patients present with numbness and muscle weakness to begin with, and progress to full loss of control of all voluntary movement as well as the inability to speak or swallow. Most patients with ALS die of respiratory failure within 3-5 years.
